Cooling your horse down after a long ride or workout.

Your horse can overheat from too much heat and exercise, leading to serious health problems.

cool downThe Country Feed Store cares about your horses health. Check out some of our tips to cooling your horse down after a long ride or workout:

  • For the remaining 10-15 minutes of your ride, walk your horse.
  • Provide water for your horse to drink after your ride. Let him drink as much as he wants.
  • When your horse is done drinking, hose him with cool running water. Start with his legs and work up to his body.
  • Let the water run over his entire body until the water running off his body is not hot anymore.
  • Scrape off the extra water and walk your horse in a cool shaded area.
  • Make sure your horse is not starting to sweat again when you are walking him around. If he starts to heat up or sweat again, repeat hosing.
  • If it is extremely hot out or humid, try setting up a few fans where you walk your horse around. Misting fans are helpful as well to avoid heat-related problems.
  • Make sure to always offer drinking water for your horse.
  • It is alright to let your horse eat some grass while you walk him around to cool down since grass is just about 80% water anyway. Hay is also alright after his cool down has completed however it is a good idea to wait an hour to feed him any grain.
